EPIC Alternative Elementary School

Welcome to the Library Media Center at EPIC Alterative School. My name is Christina T. Shepard Norman and I am the Librarian. I have also worked as a Library Clerk and Second Grade Teacher.

I am a product of the Birmingham City School System, attending EPIC, Glen Iris Elementary and Ramsay High School. I have Bachelor of Science degrees in Management Information Systems and Early Childhood Education from The University of Alabama at Birmingham, Master’s in Library and Information Systems from The University of Alabama and an Educational Specialist in Educational Leadership from Samford University.

The library is the hub of the school and I support for the entire curriculum. I want students to become lifelong readers. One of the major focuses of the library is to prepare students to use the computer to search for books, research materials using Alabama Virtual Library, and safely use the Internet.

Open checkout is available for students in the mornings and I see students for classes throughout the week. Students can also come and research during the day. Students take reading comprehension assessments using Accelerated Reader after reading a book to determine if additional strategies are needed in comprehension.

In the fall of each school year, fourth and fifth grade students have an opportunity to apply to be a part of the “Readers on the Move”. “Readers on the Move” is a district-wide book club, affording students opportunities to interact with other students using books as the focal point.

I know that all students learn differently. If you would like to work together, mapping out a plan to help your child succeed, please stop by, email or call me.

Learning doesn’t end when the book closes.
