The Birmingham City School System is committed to an educational program that recognizes the individual needs and special talents of each student.
Believing that all students have the right to an appropriate education based on the student’s individual needs and abilities, the Birmingham City School System recognizes the responsibility to provide a comprehensive educational plan to meet the needs of gifted students. Systematic action is being taken to identify these students and to nurture and develop their abilities. Such identification takes into consideration the Birmingham City School System’s cultural diversity and provides an environment in which students with recognized skills fulfill their potential.
The GATE Program is a multifaceted program. Through the GATE Program, students in kindergarten through second grade will receive gifted services in the regular classroom with consultation from the gifted teacher as needed. Students in third grade through fifth grade will receive gifted services at an assigned Cluster School. Students in sixth grade through eighth grade will receive indirect gifted services at their local school with weekly consultation from the gifted teacher.
