Ms. Constance W. Burnes, Principal
Ms. Constance W. Burnes has served as the Principal at Malachi Wilkerson since 2004.  Prior to that date she was the Principal at Lewis Elementary School and the Assistant Principal at Washington Elementary School. 
Ms. Burnes also served as a classroom teacher from 1976 until 1995. 
Ms. Burnes received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and her Ed.S. from the University of Montevallo. 
Ms. Burnes is a member of several professional organizations, including the Birmingham Education Association, the Alabama Education Association and the National Education Association. 
 
She has also been the recipient of many awards and honors, including: 
  • Selection as the Birmingham City Schools Teacher of the Year in 1986
  • Administrator of the Year (Second Place) for the American Society for Public Administration of the Greater Birmingham Chapter, 2007,
  • ALFA  Principal of the Year, 2009
  • Rotary Club Principal of the Year, 2009
  • NAACP Woman of the Year, 2009
  • Outstanding Alumna for Instructional Leadership, Montevallo University, 2009
  • Phi Delta Kappa Woman of the Year, 2009    
During the tenure of Ms. Burnes at Wilkerson Middle School, the school has been the recipient of many outstanding awards, including:

  • Alabama Torchbearer Award (3 years)
  • National Title I School of Distinction
